Keeping Kitty Cool

Summer can be hard for kitties. Fluffy has a fur coat on, and she can’t sweat to cool off. Overheating is a very real and serious risk for kitties in hot weather. Read on as a Louisville, KY vet offers some advice on keeping your feline buddy cool.

Water

The most important thing is to make sure that Fluffy always has plenty of fresh, cool water. You may want to set out more than one bowl, especially if you have more than one kitty! It’s worth mentioning that some cats prefer running water. Your feline pal may like a pet fountain!

Ice Hockey

Try offering your kitty an ice cube. She may lick at it, or just bat it around. Either way, it can’t hurt!

Brushing

Fluffy is pretty diligent about keeping her fur in good shape. However, brushing her regularly will also help. Dead fur and dander make your cute pet’s coat hot and itchy, and can interfere with the insulating qualities of her fur. (Plus, many cats just enjoy being pampered.)

Air Conditioning

One surefire way to help Fluffy beat the heat? Keep her indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. Your cute pet will be safe inside anyway! If you do let your pet out, make sure she has water and shade.

Cold Snacks

This one may be hit or miss. Some cats love cold treats, while others just turn their little noses up at them. Offer Fluffy some chilled tuna in water over ice, or perhaps a bit of frozen squeezable treat.

Broth

Hydration is very important for pets, especially at this time of year. One thing you can do is offer Fluffy some cold sodium-free broth. This contains electrolytes, which help with hydration. You can also freeze broth into cubes for your kitty, and see if she likes them.

Cool Beds

Kitties are very, very good at making themselves comfortable. Fluffy may enjoy having a frozen towel put on her bed when it’s hot. You can also point a fan at or over it.
