Causes of Stress In Cats

May 15, 2022
Did you know pets can suffer from stress? Stress isn’t only an emotional issue with cats. It can very much affect your pet’s health. She may go off her diet, or become determined to escape and run off. A Louisville, KY vet lists some things that can upset Fluffy below.

Medical Issues

Illness and injury aren’t much of a mood boost for anyone. This is also true for kitties. If Fluffy suddenly seems to be acting a bit differently, she may not be feeling well. Have your vet examine her, just to be on the safe side.

Other Pets

Kitties can—and do—get along with other cats. They can also cohabitate peacefully with our canine companions. However, this isn’t always the case. If Fluffy has a furry roommate, she may be feeling ignored, jealous, or scared.

Changes

Our feline pals are very much creatures of habit, and they don’t usually care much for major changes. Things like moving or getting a new owner can be very stressful for Fluffy! New pets joining the household can also be a source of stress, as can the absence of a four-legged friend.

Past Trauma

Bad experiences can be just as traumatic and devastating for pets as they can for people. Kitties are often particularly upset by things that happened to them when they’re young. Fluffy could actually be traumatized by events you might not have thought of as very significant. Something as mild as being accidentally locked in a closet or laundry room for a few hours can really leave long impressions on our feline friends.

Loneliness

Cats are often thought to be very aloof. However, they are actually very sociable, and can get quite lonely and depressed if they are too isolated. If Fluffy spends a lot of time alone, and if your home, schedule, and budget allow for it, you may want to consider getting her a buddy. Just think carefully first: adoption is forever.

Boredom

We know, kitties seem to really enjoy doing as little as possible. However, Fluffy can’t spend all of her time snoozing. Make sure your drowsy buddy has ways to entertain herself when she is actually awake. Your cat won’t be happy if she has nothing to do but stare at the walls all day!
