Did you know that cats are seniors by the time they’re nine? You probably won’t notice drastic changes happening quickly, and plenty of nine-year old kitties still act like kittens. However, you will need to take some precautions to keep your feline buddy happy, healthy, and safe in her golden years. Read on for some great senior cat care tips from a Louisville, KY vet.
By the time Fluffy reaches her golden years, she’ll be a master napper, capable of sleeping up to 20 hours a day. One way to make your furry buddy’s life easier? Set out lots of beds for her. Remember to wash these regularly.
One of the best things you can do for an older cat is play with her regularly. Fluffy may tap out after a few pounces, but that’s okay. The exercise and mental stimulation will still do her a lot of good.
Fluffy may have a hard time bending and stretching to reach her whole body as she ages. Brushing her gently will help keep her fur nice and shiny, and will prevent mats and tangles. This is also a good time for you to gently check your feline friend for lumps, bumps, or other concerns.
We recommend keeping any cat inside, but this is particularly important with older ones. Fluffy may be too slow to escape the neighbor’s dog or that oncoming car. She’s also at increased risk of getting lost, as she could forget how to get home.
There are a few things you can do to make your home more comfortable for Fluffy. Start leaving nightlights on after dark, to help your kitty get around more easily. Your feline pal will appreciate having a litterbox that is easy to get in and out of. You can also set out pet ramps or stairs to help her reach her favorite napping spots more easily.
Your vet may recommend more frequent appointments, especially if Fluffy develops any medical issues. At home, watch for warning signs, such as hiding, lack of appetite, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Call us right away if you notice anything unusual.
You may notice that your furry friend gets super affectionate as she ages. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and keep that motor going!
