Celebrating Hug Your Cat Day With The Kids

June 1, 2023

June 4th is Hug Your Cat Day! This is definitely something the whole family can get on board with. Our feline pals can be wonderful playmates and cuddle buddies for children. Fluffy also offers comfort on bad days, and can teach kids about love, kindness, and empathy. She’s even good for their health: Children with pets tend to have stronger immune systems and fewer allergies than those who don’t. That’s definitely something to celebrate! A Middletown, KY vet offers some tips on celebrating below.

Toys

Your little ones may also enjoy making their furry pal some cat toys. Here’s an easy one: cut two pieces of cloth to the same shape and size. Then, turn them outside-in, and sew the edges closed. Leave a small hole, which you’ll use to put catnip in. Once it’s filled, sew up that opening and give Fluffy her new toy. Just be sure to supervise play sessions carefully!

Box Castles

Box castles can be another cute kids’ project. Your youngsters can keep it simple, by just cutting a door and window into a regular box.  They can also use paint or contact paper to dress it up. If you want to go all-out, get several boxes and help them add things like turrets and balconies. Just make sure Fluffy’s palace is sturdy and safe!

Story Time

Art is great for teaching kids how to express themselves. Have the little ones draw or write about Fluffy. These may become beloved keepsakes and/or great scrapbook pieces!

Photo Session

We never get tired of seeing adorable pictures of kids and kitties. Snap some cute pics of your little one with their feline buddy. Or, have the kids take some photos of Fluffy.

Movies

Choose a purrfect, cat-themed movie to end the day with. There are lots to pick from. (Tip: You can’t go wrong with Puss N’ Boots.)

Tips

Very young children can sometimes make our feline pals nervous. This isn’t through any fault of their own: it’s just that toddlers sometimes have loud voices, and can be, well, a bit clumsy. Teach your little ones to always be very gentle with Fluffy, and to never pull her tail or force attention on her. Kids are never too young to learn kindness!
