Adopting A Less Adoptable Cat

September 15, 2022
Did you know that Adopt A Less Adoptable Pet Week starts September 18? This is a wonderful cause. There are many sweet, lovable kitties in shelters, that keep getting passed over just because they’re a little different. We’re always happy to see any feline go to a loving home, whether it’s an adorable kitten or a stoic senior cat. However, some of the less adoptable pets out there really need the love and attention. A Louisville, KY vet offers some advice on adopting a less adoptable cat in this article.

Give Fluffy Time

Kitties are very emotional little furballs, and they can be seriously affected by traumatic experiences, just as we can. Give your feline buddy plenty of time to settle in and feel safe. If Fluffy is a scaredy-cat, she may appreciate having some hiding spots, such as cat condos.

Talk To Your Vet

Part of being a good pet owner is making sure that your feline friend is comfortable. That definitely includes veterinary care! Your vet is also a great resource for tips on helping your new pet live her best nine lives. Don’t be afraid to ask for tips on Fluffy’s diet and grooming needs!

Keep Kitty In

This one applies to all kitties, but is particularly crucial for less adoptable cats. Regardless of the reason Fluffy was deemed ‘less adoptable’, whether it’s a medical issue, a rough history, or perhaps a behavioral problem, she’ll be safer indoors. Your furry buddy may not be able to defend herself. She’s also at risk of getting lost!

Offer Structure

Our feline pals are very much creatures of habit. Try to feed Fluffy at the same time each day. Nightly play sessions will also get that motor going!

Provide Kitty Comforts

It isn’t hard to make your place a kitty luxury palace. Offer your new arrival plenty of luxuries, such as soft beds, scratching posts, toys, and, of course, a clean litterbox.

Enjoy The Purrs

Cats know when someone is helping them, and they’re very appreciative of that love and care. (Fluffy also is grateful for catnip, toys, lap space, and playtime.) A nervous kitty may take some time to truly feel safe, but be patient! Sooner or later, that moment will come. As your Louisville, KY animal clinic, we’re committed to providing top-notch care.
