Fall With Fido

October 15, 2021

Autumn is officially in full swing. Many of our canine patients love this time of year. Fido finally gets to run and play outdoors without getting too hot! Of course, your pup’s care needs will change a little from one season to another. Here, a Louisville, KY vet offers some advice on spending fall with your four-legged friend.

Wellness Care

Fleas and ticks may not be as prevalent at this time of year as they are in summer, but they’re still an issue. In fact, plenty of them will be trying to get into warm spots, and would be delighted to spend the winter in Fido’s fur. Many wild animals are also out and about in autumn. Make sure your pet is current on his vaccines and parasite control! He should also be microchipped and wearing ID tags.

Beware Of Seasonal Hazards

Every season brings its own unique dangers for pets, and fall is no exception. Toxins are one of the biggest concerns here. Antifreeze, lawn and garden chemicals, pesticides, and even mushrooms are all poisonous to Man’s Best Friend. Be vigilant!

Weather Protection

Some pups need extra TLC when it’s chilly. Senior dogs and pooches with thin fur may need jackets or sweaters for cold weather. Your canine buddy should also have a comfy bed. If Fido is in his golden years, he may get quite stiff and sore on cold, damp days. Supplements may help with this. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Photo Shoot

This is a great time of year to snap some cute photos of your furry pal. Experiment with different angles and filters. There’s no such thing as too many pet pictures!

Have A Treat

Why not make a special seasonal treat for Fido? Combine natural peanut butter with pureed pumpkin, an egg, and some whole-wheat flour. Mix into a batter consistency. (You can add a little water or olive oil if needed.) Then, pour into a brownie pan and bake for about 20 minutes at 350. Instant tail wags!

Enjoy The Weather

Fall is a beautiful time of year for enjoying some long walks with Fido. Slow down and take in the changing foliage and gorgeous weather. The time you have to spend with your canine companion will pass much too quickly. Savor it while you can!
