Adopting a Shelter Pet

April 15, 2021

April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Day. This is one cause that we are happy to spread awareness about. Going through a shelter is a wonderful way for you to find your new pet. A Louisville, KY vet offers some tips on adopting a shelter pet below.

Be Ready To Commit

Hopefully this goes without saying, but adoption is a lifelong commitment. Before you sign any papers, make sure that you are ready, willing, and able to provide your new animal companion with love and great care for the rest of their life.

Choose Wisely

Our animal companions are all pretty cute in their own way. However, making a good match goes a bit further than choosing the most adorable dog or cat you see. Pets are all different, and they all have different personalities. With dogs, their care needs can also vary greatly, particularly when it comes to things like training, exercise, and food. Consider your household, budget, and lifestyle before picking your new furry friend. For example, if you like hiking and want Fido to be a trail buddy, a Chihuahua may not be your best bet.

Don’t Expect Perfection

Animals aren’t perfect, any more than we are. Your new pet may have some bad habits, and/or may need some more training. Be patient, and don’t expect overnight changes.

Schedule A Checkup

One of the first things you’ll want to do is schedule a veterinary appointment. Your new pal will need a thorough exam, as well as parasite control, microchipping, and any recommended vaccines they aren’t current on. This is a great time to ask for specific care tips!

Let Love Grow

Going to a new home can be pretty scary for our furry friends. Your new buddy may be scared and timid at first. They may also sleep a lot as they recuperate from the stress of being in a shelter. Just give them the time they need to settle in.

Pat Yourself On The Back

Adopting a shelter pet may not change the world, but it will change the world for that pet. You’re also helping the shelter help other homeless animals, both by freeing up space and paying the adoption fees that provide funding. These are all things you can feel great about!
