Caring For a Dog With Allergies

April 1, 2020
Did you know that dogs can suffer from allergies, just like people can? Allergies are no more fun for Fido than they are for us. While allergies can’t be cured, they can be managed. There are also some things you can do to help keep your pet more comfortable at home. A Middletown, KY vet offers tips on caring for a dog with allergies below.

Veterinary Care

First and foremost, you’ll need to get Fido tested to find out exactly what he is allergic to. If food allergies are suspected, this may mean putting your canine buddy on a very bland diet for a while. Once symptoms have stopped, you can start reintroducing things one by one, to find out what your pooch is reacting to. Once the culprit has been identified, your vet can go over specific treatment options.

Vacuum

Vacuuming daily is a good idea for anyone with a pet, but it’s going to be particularly helpful for anyone whose dog has allergies. You don’t have to do the entire house every day. Just do your pup’s favorite hangouts and high-traffic areas daily, and then follow up with a deep clean every week. You may also want to invest in a steam cleaner. (Bonus: these are also great for messes!)

Air Filter

Dogs are often allergic to things like cigarette fumes, aerosols, and perfumes candles. Remember to change your air filter regularly. A good air purifier is also a wise investment, especially if you and/or your family members also have allergies. Plants can also greatly improve air quality. You can find a list of safe and unsafe plants at the ASPCA website.

Paws for Thought

Get into the habit of wiping Fido’s paws and belly down before you bring him back in. This will remove dust and pollen from his coat. (Bonus: it will also keep him from tracking mud in.)

Pollen Counts

Get an app that monitors pollen counts, or just check them online. Limit your four-legged friend’s outdoor times when levels are high.

Products

Choose hypoallergenic detergents and shampoos for Fido and his things. We also recommend washing your furry friend’s bedding regularly. You may also want to get removable slipcovers for your furniture.
